  43. ChLib is a library of game cheats. It contains a lot of tricks to make the
  44. resolution of some games easier. To consult ChLib, just change into the ChLib
  45. directory and type "CHLIB". Easy. Now you can choose your favourite game and
  46. learn all the tricks for that game. Remember: winners don't use drugs, and
  47. so real players don't use cheats!

  57. ChLib is a copyrighted cardware: it means that you can copy it to your friends
  58. or uploading it on a BBS freely, as long as you don't modify the original
  59. package. But if you want to use after the trial period (21 days) you have
  60. to register it by sending a postcard of your city to the authors. After you
  61. sent the postcard, you can consider your copy registered. There is no special
  62. advantages for the registered users, but sending a postcard isn't very
  63. expansive, is it? Moreover, you can spread the text taken from ChLib as long
  64. as you don't delete the ChLib banner in the top of the text (it's written
  65. when you output a text to a file).

  74. The file CHLIB.LBC is the centre of ChLib, because it cointains all the cheats.
  75. So ChLib actually consists of CHLIB.LBC only. But to consult ChLib, you need
  76. a browser. The official browser of ChLib is the one spreaded with ChLib, that
  77. is the file CHLIB.EXE. It's very important that you understand how the next
  78. versions of ChLib will be spreaded. In fact the data file (CHLIB.LBC) and the
  79. browser (CHLIB.EXE) will be upgraded separately.

  81. - Data file updates
  82.   To update the data file, we wrote a little program, called CHPATCH, that
  83.   will help you very much. Infact, the updates will consist of little files
  84.   that contain ONLY what has been modified since the last version. CHPATCH
  85.   will insert these changes into CHLIB.LBC. A new update will be released
  86.   each month. So all you have to do is download this little file and run
  87.   CHPATCH, instead of downloading a big 2Mb data file.
  88.   IMPORTANT: please pay attention to use the right patch. Each patch can be
  89.   applied only on the previous version of CHLIB.LBC. So, for example, the
  90.   April patch can be applied only on the March version of ChLib. The name
  91.   of the package file is CHD-XXY.ZIP (the extension may change), where XX is
  92.   the first two letters of the month (JA,FE,MR,AP,MY,JU,JL,AU,SE,OC,NO,DE) and
  93.   Y is the last digit of the year (e.g. 6 for 1996). So, for example,
  94.   CHD-SE6.ZIP is the update for september 1996.

  96. - Official browser upgrades
  97.   The upgrades of the browser will be very rare, or so I think. In fact we
  98.   will spread a new version only for bug-fixing. Perhaps we will release
  99.   other official browsers for different OS (Windows 3.1, '95, OS/2, Linux,
  100.   ecc.), but it's not sure. The name of the package file of the official
  101.   browser is CHBRWxx.ZIP (the extension may change), where xx is the version
  102.   of the browser.

  104. However, a complete package with the last data file update and the last
  105. browser upgrade will always be avaible. The name is CHLIB.ZIP (the extension
  106. may change).

  115. There are several kinds of cheats that can be found in ChLib. This is a list
  116. of all the categories:
  117.  
  118. - CHEAT It is the most common trick. Generally it's a key combination that
  119. active something that helps the player during the game, like invincibility,
  120. infinity lives, level skipping, etc. Please, before e-mail me beacuase a
  121. cheat doesn't work, try it a lot of times: sometimes it is just a timig pro-
  122. blem (you must do it in the right moment).
  123.  
  124. - HACK It consists on modifying one file with an HEX editor (normally the
  125. saved game file) to help the player, for example to obtain a lot of credits.
  126. To apply the hacks, you need of some programs:
  127.  
  128.   - An EXE file decompressor. Some software house compress the EXE files with
  129.     programs like PKLITE that leave the file executable. But before hacking,
  130.     it could be necessary decompress the EXE. The best program I found is
  131.     UNP by Ben Castricum that can be found in Internet at:
  132.     ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/dresden/archiver/execomp/unp411a.zip
  133.     It's a SHAREWARE program.
  134.  
  135.   - An HEX editor. You need this to modify the file. It's very important
  136.     that the editor has the search feature. I use ProView by McAfee,
  137.     that can be found (I'm not sure) at www.mcafee.com. It's a SHAREWARE
  138.     program, and it isn't only an editor.

  140. There are mainly two hack formats: the first is a search&change hack:
  141.  
  142. search AA BB CC DD EE
  143. change -- -- 11 22 --
  144.  
  145. This means that you must search for HEX values AA BB CC DD EE and replace
  146. them with AA BB 11 22 EE.
  147. the second format is a go&change hacks: you must enter a value in a specified
  148. offset in the file. To do this, you only need of a "go" feature in your editor.
  149.  
  150. REMEMBER: you *SHOULD* backup your file before hacking them, because an error
  151. can make a game unplayable. Moreover, a patch cannot be apllied on a modified
  152. file.
